My name is Mary Henlin, I am 25 years old, and I have been doing
photography for the last 9 1/2 years. I went to school at the Academy
of Art University in San Francisco, and majored in fine art
photography with a minor in graphic design. I also began my own
successful freelance photography business up in the bay area, doing
commissioned work for bands, models, and music zines. During June of
2004, I was sent out to Europe to photograph bands on tour for a music
zine, and ended up severely injuring my back while on a media platform
that collapsed at a metalfest in Germany. I ended up bedridden for
months, before and after undergoing spinal fusion surgery at UCSF
hospital. My injuries forced me to drop out of school, 3 semester shy
of having my bachelor's degree, and caused me to move back to my
hometown for long, slow recovery.
Though my photography career has taken a few pauses, I have
managed to keep working consistently over the years....in the beginning
I was all about Black and White, and infrared film...and would strictly
do all my work in the darkroom using traditional processes. When I
became injured, I had to give up the darkroom for a couple years, and
during that time I advanced my skills with digital photography, and
learned to appreciate color photography and the benefits of the digital
image editing and printing processes.
